Fresh off their widely acclaimed, two Obie Award–winning off-Broadway debut Can I Be Frank?—about the work of queer comedian, musician, and performance artist Frank Maya—Morgan Bassichis will share preliminary reflections on performance as a mode of necromancy. Through neurotic stand-up comedy, haunting music, and historical digression, Bassichis reinterprets the legacies of queer and Jewish artists and activists—first with Larry Mitchell’s cult 1977 text, The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions, currently with the work of Frank Maya, who died of AIDS-related complications in 1995, and next with the Amy Winehouse songbook. These works live at the edges of stand-up and séance and oral history, inviting audiences to expand their collective memory.

Morgan Bassichis is a writer and performer who has been described as “fiercely hilarious” by The New Yorker and “I think an actor but hasn’t been in anything” by their father. Morgan’s one-person show, Can I Be Frank?, about the groundbreaking late queer comedian Frank Maya, won two Obie Awards in 2026. They have performed in museums, gay bars, parks, and many precious New York institutions that have supported artists and writers for generations, like Abrons Arts Center, Danspace Project, the Kitchen, and the Poetry Project. Morgan coedited Questions to Ask Before Your Bat Mitzvah (Wendy’s Subway, 2023) with Jay Saper and Rachel Valinsky. Morgan also edited and wrote the introduction to the 2019 Nightboat Books reprint of the 1977 cult classic The Faggots & Their Friends Between Revolutions, written by Larry Mitchell and illustrated by Ned Asta. An exhibition of Morgan’s work, More Little Ditties, was copresented in 2023 by the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts at Harvard University and the Institute for Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University.
